Remote
Areas
There are certain areas, beautifull for trekking and exploring, that haven't seen a
massive flow of tourists and are thus untouched by foreign influence. This provides
a better chance to integrate with local people, or enjoy the scenery in solitude.
These areas generally require a special trekking permit, which should be obtained in
Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Dolpo
Dolpo is located
inside the Shey-Phoksundo National Park. It lies to the north of the Dhaulagiri Range and
towards the Tibetan Plateau. Here one can find a finely preserved ecosystem that
consists of variety of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep and the elusive snow
leopard.
The view of the Kanjiroba
peak, Phoksumdo Lake and the Dhauligiri massif is one of the most rewarding moments of
this trek. A visit to the Phoksumdo Gompa- dedicated to the ancient Bon Po religion is a
memorable experience. This trek is for people who are exceptionally fit and prepared to take what
Himalayan wilderness trekking has to offer.
Mustang
Mustang, or Lo
Manthang, is a desert plateau located in the upper valley of the Kali Gandaki River, and
to the north of the main Himalayan range. Tourist access to Mustang is controlled with a
view to helping it retain its exclusiveness. The people of this region still follow the
ancient Bon religion.
The highlight of the trek
includes the visit to the Mustang Palace, the visit to Lo Manthang and pony rides to the
border with Tibet.
