National
Parks
Nepal is abundant with
world renowned wildlife reserves and national parks such as Chitwan and Everest National
Park.
Chitwan
National Park
Once
the hunting ground for British and Nepalese aristocrats. Today, the animals - elephant,
rhinoceros, tiger, leopard and deer - are protected, not shot. Probably the greatest
thrill here is to scout for wildlife on the back of an elephant. If that's too
uncomfortable, you can do the same thing in a jeep or canoe or go jungle walking with
experienced guides. Watch out for leeches, which operate with stealth-like efficiency
during the monsoon
Everest
National Park
Besides including the highest mountains in the world, this
region is very rich in mountain flora and fauna. The plants include the famous
rhododendron bushes and other species such as birch, blue pine, etc. The wildlife include
Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, mouse hare, black bear and snow leopards. Bird species include Impeyan
pheasant, snow cock, snow pigeon, and Himalayan griffon vulture.
Other
National Parks
There are many more national parks in Nepal, each with its special gift for
humanity. These include: Royal Bardia National Park, Khaptad National Park, Langtang
National Park, Rara National Park, Shey Phoksundo National Park, Makalu-Barun National
Park, Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve, Parsa Wildlife Reserve, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve,
Annapurna Conservation Area, and Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve.
