Festivals and Dances |
| |
With over 40 ethnical groups, there seem to be festivals every week in Nepal. From dancing in the street, god theatrical interpretations, gathering of thousands of Buddhist monks under the full moon, and the biggest Hindu festival Dashain, which lasts for two weeks in which most Nepali's head back for their home village to celebrate with their family.
Dances
There are many forms of popular dances, and their flavor changes as one moves up from the lowland Terai to the doons and valleys to the high hills and mountains. Every dance is performed for some spiritual purpose. The choreography include simple wood stick dances in the south to the intricate details of the trance-induced dances of the Kathmandu Valley to the furious mask dances to the north. Basically, the dances are divided into Hindu and Buddhist cultures.
Festivals
The dates of Nepali festivals go with a lunar calendar, so in the table below are the corresponding dates for the Christian annual calendar. |
